With our joint experience of choreographing, teaching creative dance and film making, the Liberty Express team joins forces with locally-based organisations whose work increases opportunities for children living amidst severe deprivation all around the world. Together, we run series of dance workshops and film shoots for the children in each location.
Liberty Express has already run successfully in London, New Orleans, Mumbai and Rio and we now need your help to return and develop the work we’ve started in these locations and to expand the project to Lesvos, Greece to work with young refugees whose lives have been drastically affected by war. This is why we are launching a Kickstarter campaign.
In the workshops, the children are encouraged to delve into their imaginations and experiment with movement, rhythm and space and go beyond their automatic ways of dancing. Through teaching various methods of improvisation, the children can discover ways of moving their bodies that are very personal and expressive for them. There’s no right or wrong – we create an environment in which they can get absorbed in the magic and creativity of movement. They don’t have to remember routines nor is there a correct way to lift their leg or a correct way to slide across the room and therefore their dances come straight from their hearts. This can be really liberating and can really make them feel more confident to express themselves through dance. Therefore children from all levels of dance and all backgrounds can be included and gives them the opportunity to express themselves freely and confidently.
The children are then filmed dancing in their homes and the surrounding areas and where possible we enable the children to film their own worlds from their point of view.
The various groups of children, thousands of miles apart watch videos of each other dancing, thus communicating cross-culturally without words. We also initiate live online sessions between the groups of children so they can exchange dance ideas in live time.
We’ve seen how stimulated the children are to be involved in an international dance film project and how excited they are to meet children from other countries who are also going through the same creative process. They are able to relate to each other on a gut level through the physical expression, music and the moving images and by default their families and friends are also involved.
The whole process will be documented and presented as a dance film and video installation.
Liberty Express has launched a Kickstarter to help fund our next project in Lesvos.
